Start at the lane
Map the direction of travel, the stopping point, where a queue forms and when a gate decision must be available. Separate incoming and outgoing requirements. Discuss the expected range of vehicle types with the site team. An ANPR design for a controlled entry should not be treated as identical to a high-speed road application.
Review the capture conditions
Plate capture depends on installation angle, distance, illumination, exposure and vehicle movement. Manufacturer guidance explains why a suitable daytime overview may still be inadequate for plate recognition at night. Use the documentation for the exact proposed camera and test the scene rather than applying one universal setting to every entrance. [1]
Keep capture and recognition separate in the test
First inspect whether the plate is readable in the source image. Then review the software result for the same event. Record representative examples of unreadable, uncertain and correctly interpreted plates. This helps the team identify whether a problem comes from the image, a software configuration or the operating procedure.
Decide what an uncertain result should do
Define a manual review or visitor process before enabling any supported gate integration. An unmatched result should not lead to an improvised operating decision. Keep vehicle-access rules and barrier safety responsibilities distinct. Make sure authorised staff can manage exceptions and use the approved manual procedure.
Test more than the ideal example
Include representative day and night conditions, relevant vehicle types and the busy period. Agree how the sample is chosen and how results will be recorded. Keep an exception log rather than presenting only the best demonstration clip. Final acceptance criteria belong in the project scope.
Manage access to vehicle records
State who needs searchable records and how long they need to be retained. Restrict exports and avoid publishing actual visitor plates in a public demonstration. Review permissions when staff responsibilities change. A vehicle log is operational information, not a marketing asset.
